Lakers land Mark Williams in trade with Hornets to give LeBron James, Luka Doncic their center, per report

Trade Details: The Lakers acquired Charlotte Hornets center Mark Williams in exchange for Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, a first-round swap in 2030, and an unprotected first-round pick in 2031.

Replacing Anthony Davis: With the departure of Anthony Davis in the Luka Dončić trade, Williams is brought in as both an immediate starter at center and a long-term partner for Dončić.

Addressing Center Position Needs: The center position has been a weakness for the Lakers this season, even though Davis had been playing well in the role. Acquiring Williams helps address the Lakers’ lack of depth at this position. –

Lakers’ Focus on Versatility: Lakers' GM Rob Pelinka emphasized the need for a player who can provide versatility, mobility, and the ability to catch lob passes from Dončić, all qualities Williams brings to the team.

Athleticism and Defense: Williams is a highly athletic seven-footer who excels at moving and protecting the rim defensively. His skills make him an ideal fit for the Lakers' new-look lineup alongside Dončić and LeBron James.

Rookie Contract Advantage: Williams is still on his rookie deal, which allows the Lakers to maintain flexibility with their salary cap for further depth or potential trades.

Hornets’ Growing Asset Pool: In exchange for Williams, the Hornets are gathering valuable draft picks, including those from the Lakers and Mavericks, which will help build the team for the future with more young assets.
